UConn Greenhouse Tour is June 23rd at 11am

On June 23rd at 11am The Connecticut Orchid Society is Touring the UConn Greenhouses

The University of Connecticut will be

hosting members of the COS for a private

tour of the University greenhouses. The

tour will start at 11 AM at the Torrey Life

Sciences Building on the UConn campus in

Storrs. The Society has developed a close

relationship with the University of

Connecticut over the years and is

privileged to be offered this private tour.

The UConn greenhouses contain a diverse

and well regarded orchid collection

focused on species as well as a diverse

collection of non-orchids.

RSVP by Friday 22nd of June to Cheryl Mizak at president@ctorchids.org

Directions to UConn Greenhouses

We will be met at the North Parking Garage and

walk from there. Parking in the ground lot just

beyond the garage is also acceptable, because

they don’t enforce parking on weekends.

Coming in from Rt 44, take the Discovery Drive

entrance to campus, which is just west of the

intersection of 195. Follow Discovery Drive to

the light. Proceed straight across: visitors center

is to the right, parking garage is to the left. The

ground lot is on right just past visitor’s center.

Members of The Connecticut Orchid Society will be on hand to hold an orchid class, plant sale and repotting clinic on Saturday, March 25, 2017.  Snow date (hopefully not!) will be the following Saturday, April 1.

Basics of Orchid Growing Class11:00 am to 12:00 pm.  This class is geared towards beginner and hobby orchid growers.  Expert growers from the Society will cover the basics of growing orchids and share tips and techniques they have learned to grow them well and get them to re-bloom year after year.  Audience participation and questions are encouraged. Curious about orchids and how to grow them well? Wondering how to get that orchid you received as a gift to bloom again?  This class is for you.

Orchid Repotting Clinic12 pm through 3:00 pm.  Need some help repotting your orchids?  Want to learn the ins and outs of repotting? Anxious about tackling the job yourself?  Bring your orchids that need repotting and a clean pot for each. The Society will do the rest and you’ll go home with a freshly repotted orchid.  The cost starts at $5.00 per orchid in pots up to 6” and varies for larger pot sizes.

Orchids for Sale10 am through 4:00 pm. Looking for an interesting orchid to add to your collection?  The Society will have a wide variety of orchids for sale that are different than those typically available in the big box and grocery stores.  All sale plants will be blooming or in-bud to bloom soon and are appropriate for all growing conditions and beginner growers.

Proceeds from plant sales and the repotting clinic benefit The Connecticut Orchid Society.

SamBridge Nursery and Greenhouses is located at 437 North Street Greenwich, CT 06830.  Phone: (203) 869-3418.  Visit their website at http://sambridge.com/2017-garden-talks-events/.
