“Paphiopedilums are, and have been since the early nineteenth century, one of the most popular of all orchid groups and are now widely grown throughout the world. There are almost 70 known species, all of which have their own attractive qualities appealing to growers, but many species are rare in the wild. Recent evidence has been synthesized to produce a modern classification of the genus. Chapters on the hybridization, cultivation (by Michael Tibbes), and conservation are also included. This treatment is a framework for future research as well as a sound guide to growers of these endlessly fascinating orchids.” (Cribb)
