He got his degree<br \/>\nin Biology and began his taxonomic studies in the orchid family in 1981. During the<br \/>\nnext 4 years, he lived most of the time in Manaus where he studied Amazon orchids<br \/>\nand began his Master\u2019s degree. Shortly after returning to Rio de Janeiro, the Master\u2019s<br \/>\nwas completed on \u201csection Cattleyodes of the genus Laelia\u201d. Since then, the main<br \/>\ninterest has been on the Brazilian laelias and cattleyas. He is the author of several<br \/>\npapers ranging from species descriptions to subjects of growers\u2019 interest in Brazilian,<br \/>\nGerman and U.S. publications. He is also the author of two books. Since 2000, he lives in<br \/>\nHaines City, Florida, where he operates Miranda Orchids, an orchid nursery<br \/>\nspecializing in Brazilian species and the Cattleya alliance.
