Presented by The Connecticut Orchid Society and hosted by Sam Bridge Nursery.

Please call (203) 869-3418 or email maggie@sambridge.com to sign up for the Garden Talks. Spaces are limited. Please indicate which talk(s) you’d like to attend.

Members of The Connecticut Orchid Society will be on hand to hold an orchid class, plant sale and repotting clinic on Saturday, March 25, 2017.  Snow date (hopefully not!) will be the following Saturday, April 1.

Basics of Orchid Growing Class11:00 am to 12:00 pm.  This class is geared towards beginner and hobby orchid growers.  Expert growers from the Society will cover the basics of growing orchids and share tips and techniques they have learned to grow them well and get them to re-bloom year after year.  Audience participation and questions are encouraged. Curious about orchids and how to grow them well? Wondering how to get that orchid you received as a gift to bloom again?  This class is for you.

Orchid Repotting Clinic12 pm through 3:00 pm.  Need some help repotting your orchids?  Want to learn the ins and outs of repotting? Anxious about tackling the job yourself?  Bring your orchids that need repotting and a clean pot for each. The Society will do the rest and you’ll go home with a freshly repotted orchid.  The cost starts at $5.00 per orchid in pots up to 6” and varies for larger pot sizes.

Orchids for Sale10 am through 4:00 pm. Looking for an interesting orchid to add to your collection?  The Society will have a wide variety of orchids for sale that are different than those typically available in the big box and grocery stores.  All sale plants will be blooming or in-bud to bloom soon and are appropriate for all growing conditions and beginner growers.

Proceeds from plant sales and the repotting clinic benefit The Connecticut Orchid Society.

Wednesday, September 14th meeting will be held at the Cheshire Senior Center

240 Maple Ave, Cheshire, CT 06410

doors open at 6:30pm, meeting starts at 7:30pm

This month, Greg Griffs returns from Longwood Gardens with the topic: The Wonders of Orchid Roots!

  • The Wonders of Orchid Roots:
    • “The life of the plant is in the new roots.” The roots of an orchid plant determine its health. We’ll talk about the structure and function of the roots, how they interact with the environment, and how to best facilitate good root culture. We also talk a great deal about watering, as watering and potting are two of the most important aspects of orchid growing. This talk is excellent for the beginner and intermediate grower alike, aimed at fine tuning our understanding of orchid culture on the whole.

June 18th Saturday – Hike into Black Creek Bog to see Native Orchids.

June 18th Saturday – Hike into Black Creek Bog to see Native Orchids.

We will primarily be looking for Cypripedium reginae plus other orchids.  The bog is an alkaline, sphagnum peat bog, dominated by black fir in a late successional stage of development.

The cattails are now invading and will smother the cypripediums.  There are also many ferns and mosses, sundews, (bear and deer droppings), pink pyrolas, and twinflowers.

This will be a long day starting in Sprakers, NY.  We will gather at 9:30 a.m. and proceed on our adventure.  There are several motels and B&B’s in the area, or camping in the field of Thyme.

Make sure to bring wet-able shoes, sandals or boots, Insect repellant, hat, long sleeves, and a high collar shirt and long pants.  Plus of course your camera.

There will be a stop in the afternoon at Paul Serano’s, a former orchid enthusiast who now runs the family African violet business, Lyndon Lynon Greenhouses.

Please contact Cheryl Mizak ASAP if you are interested or need more information.  CMizak@alcher.com
